Explore Outbound 521

The Outbound 521 is a capable bluewater cruiser that can be handled by a sailing couple.

View Technical Specs

A center cockpit with clean lines, moderate displacement, low freeboard, push button sailing. The refined Outbound 521 is prepared to delight a new generation of sailors.

Critical to our design refinement was building a yacht that can be handled by a cruising couple with ease. This means a moderate displacement hull, a low cockpit, and a short companionway. The result is a comfortable, easy to handle, and safe offshore passagemaker.

Performance, Safety, & Comfort

  • Offshore Center Cockpit

Designed and built to be as comfortable offshore as she is on the hook, the 521 features a center cockpit that is deep and secure. Sails and instruments are within easy reach and the short companionway makes the cockpit an extension of the interior with easy and safe access.

  • Safety & Performance

At Outbound Yachts we tackle safety from a performance and ergonomic point of view. Yachts designed to sail fast, not to mention avoid adverse weather. The 521 is optimized to fight fatigue with simple systems and excellent ergonomics, making her simply safer for the cruising couple.

  • Liveaboard Comfort

The center cockpit design lends itself to accommodations below that are ideal for both cruising couples and liveaboard families. The semi-raised salon is spacious and bright. The lovely passageway galley provides plenty of room for owners who enjoy cooking.

Design & Sail Plan

The Outbound 521, designed by Tim Kernan, is recognized for not only its beauty but also as a seaworthy hull that can cross any ocean. She is designed as a cutter, which has proven to be versatile and easy to handle for a couple. A fine entry, relatively low freeboard, and her aft sections being free of unnecessary drag makes for an easily driven hull. These same characteristics help her to be well balanced and extremely comfortable in a seaway.

Hull & Deck

A solid, thick, hand-laid hull with a vacuum infused cored deck, makes for a stiff, rugged boat. While underway it is easy to walk forward or aft on the generous side decks. As with any high-quality offshore cruising sailboat, exterior handholds are abundant. While safety at sea is paramount, her deck also lends itself to lounging in a secluded anchorage. The wide sugar scoop transom leads to an aft deck space perfect for relaxing on.

Cockpit

The center cockpit creates space down below that cruising couples have become accustomed to in a high-quality bluewater sailboat. However, the Outbound 521 also keeps to her roots and features a deep, safe cockpit that is very rare on center cockpit sailboats. All winches are within easy reach, allowing the helmsperson to trim sails while piloting.

Hard Dodger

In keeping with Outbound tradition, the 521 is built with a robust hard dodger. This dodger provides protection from weather and is also easy to see through while sailing. A cutaway in the dodger, along with a short companionway, allows for easy movement between the cockpit and the interior.

Ask If We Can Do It

Lithium Ion Batteries

The optional lithium ion battery package modernizes every Outbound and revolutionizes power usage.

Selden SMF System

The engineers at the largest mast manufacturer in the world created the synchronized in-mast furling system and it is available on every Outbound model. Furling an in-mast sail with perfect outhaul tension reduces the worry of fouling a mainsail. Additionally, it means owners will deploy the main more often, which translates to more days sailing.

Starlink

Offshore connectivity is now available through Starlink systems. Having internet available while sailing anywhere on the planet is truly a game changer.
